Personality Traits of Cryptocurrency Holders: A Study Reveals the Dark Tetrad
The world of cryptocurrencies is often associated with financial revolution, but a new study has shed light on a darker side of crypto owners. Researchers from the University of Toronto and Miami have uncovered troubling personality traits among cryptocurrency holders, including narcissism, machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism, collectively known as the “Dark Tetrad.”
Published in the scientific journal PLOS One, the study surveyed 2,001 American adults in 2022 and found that a third of them owned or had owned cryptocurrencies. The correlation between crypto ownership and these dark personality traits raises questions about the psychological profile of crypto investors and the motivations behind their high-risk investments.
The study also revealed that crypto investors are predominantly men with a strong aversion to authoritarianism. Contrary to popular belief, these investors come from diverse backgrounds and do not necessarily align with far-right ideologies.
Furthermore, the study found that crypto investors tend to favor alternative social media platforms and have a higher tendency to believe in conspiracy theories. This combination of traits, along with above-average income and an argumentative attitude, can drive them to engage in risky financial behaviors, such as aggressive investments in volatile assets like cryptocurrencies.
It is important to note that while these findings are based on correlations, they do not apply to all crypto investors. Many individuals may invest responsibly and not exhibit the mentioned psychological characteristics. Therefore, these results should be interpreted cautiously and not generalized to the entire crypto investor community.
